Massage makes babies more “intelligent”!
Responsible for the training of massage techniques and a specialist in infancy, Brigitte Bernard Stacke explains how the relationship between the skin and a baby’s intelligence is closely related.
Confronted with the phenomena of this “strange world” all around, we instinctively understand that the simple fact of gently touching an infant can help it to feel secure and to relax.
Nevertheless, this skin-against-skin contact triggers off far more complex reactions than those linked to affection. The skin tissues, which derive from the same cells as those stimulating the nervous system in the foetus, are especially rich in sensitive endings. Hence, the merest superficial contact is enough to release bursts of enzymes, which in turn activate the production of chemical substances within the brain.
These hormones and neuro-transmitters guarantee improved circulation of all the messages and stimulate activation of the cerebral connections that are still immature in the baby (synapses).
As a result of such activity, the child rapidly develops improved psychomotor coordination. The toddler will learn how to sit, walk and draw more quickly.
It will further develop better physical resistance, since stimulation by touch also strengthens the immune system.
Aside from such physical progress, a real intellectual agility is to be noted. The reason is simple. A child that feels “reassured” and comfortable also tends to be more inquisitive and forward-looking, having the desire to learn.
All good reasons for massaging an infant during the first few days of his life, and as long as it cares to accept! Agitated youngsters between the age of 2 and 4 may have difficulty in accepting tickling sessions. This is why it is preferable to adapt the attention given to suit the availability of your children.
