Frequency of feeds

The first question likely to cross your mind is  « How many feeds will my baby need? »

There are no hard and fast rules, and above all, at the start, your baby should find his or her own pace – and so should you!

As a general rule, it is advisable to allow 2-4 hours between feeds during the day. In fact, as it takes your baby 2 to 3 hours to digest, it would be harmful for his digestion if you fed him every hour.

However, there is no point setting your alarm clock to go off every three hours either - there´s nothing wrong with waiting until baby lets you know he´s hungry!

At night, you can breastfeed your baby if he wants it, but do not feel compelled to wake him up. Remember, too, that in the first weeks, this tiny tot will have no trouble letting you know he´s hungry!

Moreover, your child may well feel fuller after the morning feed, as your milk contains more fat and is richer at this time of the day. Remember: the amount that your child takes in may differ from one feed to the next.

As a rule of thumb, a feed lasts 20 to 30 minutes. At the start, baby can suckle both breasts, and then you can alternate. The pace will set itself naturally…

Our tips

Looking after your breasts

If you have decided to breastfeed your child, then during the final month of pregnancy you can start to massage your nipple so that it gets used to the stimulation it will soon be receiving.

Stress-free breast feeding

Ask the healthcare staff to give your baby to you straight after the birth, so that the latch-on takes place within the first few minutes.
